Villagers can learn in five different skill areas: Farming, Building, Researching, Healing, and Breeding, and they can gain three levels of achievement at each skill: Apprentice, Adept, and Master. Villagers will gradually gain skill automatically as they practice a skill. Higher levels will allow the villager to perform the task better and faster. Sometimes a Master in a skill is necessary to fulfill a puzzle. There are also two levels of six different areas of research to fulfill, which often unlock various abilities or puzzles.

Having already braved the Amazon and conquered Everest, where does an intrepid adventurer go next? In Hidden Explorer: Devil's Triangle, the organization H.E.A.T. (the Hidden Expedition Adventure Team) has sent you - its top explorer - to investigate the disappearance of a pilot who went down while flying through the treacherous Bermuda Triangle.

Predictably, things start to go sideways from the moment you enter the mysterious triangle. After a submarine accident, you find yourself on an uncharted island that happens to be inhabited! I'll stop there so as not to spoil anything, but rest assured the story takes plenty of intriguing twists and turns.

Hidden Expedition: Devil's Triangle takes a page from Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst by combining hidden object gameplay with the ability to move freely between scenes, pick up inventory items, and use them to solve puzzles in different rooms. A typical scene will have a few objects to pick up, one or two exits that lead to different areas, and places of interest to zoom in on for a closer look, typically revealing either a hidden object scene with a combination of random and key items to search for, or a mini-game of sort some such as a door that needs to be unlocked.

Some hidden object searches involve straight-up lists, while others are clever variations on the formula, such as having to find pairs of related images like a paintbrush and palette, or objects belong to a theme (like "8 items for the magic act").

The game is untimed, and if players get stuck they can use a hint from an infinitely recharging stockpile. Depending on context, the hint will either reveal the location of a hidden object, offer guidance about what to do next, or allow you to permanently skip past a puzzle. Clicking on an item also reveals its silhouette. As if that weren't enough, the game also keeps a detailed log of everything you've done and still need to do.

Like its predecessors Hidden Expedition: Everest and Hidden Expedition: Titanic, Devil's Triangle boasts attractively drawn scenes complimented by audio that has been well-tailored to the game's setting and tone. In addition to immersive music and sound effects, there are also smatterings of voice-acted dialogue that enrich the personalities of the various characters you'll meet along the way.

You can also have conversations with characters by choosing from different dialogue options if you're interested in learning more about a topic. This is a wonderful way of letting the player choose how much dialogue he or she wants to read through instead of taking the lazy way out with an all-or-nothing SKIP button. If you just want to jump back into the game, you can end the conversation early after the essential information about what to do next has been revealed. Or, you can see what else the character feels like talking about and learn more about the game world.

It's thoughtful touches like these that make Hidden Expedition: Devil's Triangle stand out as a great hidden object game. The variety of original puzzles and thoughtfully composed hidden object scenes (as opposed to haphazardly plopped down clip art) ensures that the game feels fresh from beginning to end.

If there's a criticism of Devil's Triangle is that I wish there were more of it. Comparisons to Return to Ravenhearst don't apply when it comes to length, because Devil's Triangle is a much shorter game with fewer locations to keep track of at a time. Provided you take time to figure out all the puzzles instead of skipping them, you can expect a couple of evenings worth of gameplay. Granted, you can replay the game with some of the hidden objects in different spots. Devil's Triangle ends with an abrupt cliffhanger ending, which sort of feels like you just bought half a game. However, if the next chapter is as good as this one it will be worth the wait.

The latest building sim Empire Builder - Ancient Egypt by developer Iguana Entertainment enables the player to experience those miracles of architecture much quicker. While the game might lack the challenge and complexity of similar titles, it is still worth a look for players searching for a resource management title in a new setting. As the new apprentice, you serve different Pharaohs as the entrusted builder at ten locations with three levels each. Veteran players will immediately feel familiar with the basics of the game. To improve your Egyptian cities you can choose between various types of buildings, such as houses, infrastructure, city and civil buildings, as well as monuments. The houses are your major source of income, which is collected on a regular basis. This income is important to train workers, order materials, or acquire desired lots.

Infrastructural buildings like the quarry, the wharf, or the mine may lower the city's overall appeal and that of nearby houses, but they provide functional advantages, such as cheaper materials or lower costs for training workers. In contrast, civil and city buildings increase the appeal of the city and nearby houses, but on top of that they also activate some further advantages. By constructing a beautiful garden the player can train gardeners, thereby increasing the number of possible upgrades on houses. Other buildings such as the courthouse, the school or the well do not fulfill any particular function, but still go very well with the basic theme of the game.

A somewhat quirky feature is related to the construction of monuments, namely mastabas and tombs. When you build tombs near houses, green-shimmering mummies will appear on the streets occasionally, and you will have to drive them out of the city with a magical staff, in a similar fashion to banishing ghosts or orcs in Wonderburg. Sometimes you will receive bulletins throughout missions, which will provide you with additional money as a reward for fulfilling the citizens' needs.

Two of the most interesting twists of Empire Builder - Ancient Egyptare bidding and haggling for houses and lots, and magical amulets. When you decide to sell any of your houses, three different bids will appear within the next seconds. You can decide to accept the highest bid, or try to haggle with each of the bidders to even increase the offers.

The magical amulets are even more interesting - in the beginning of each level you can decide to activate one of those amulets, which you will earn through finishing levels. To choose the right amulet in the beginning of each level according to your objectives and your basic situation can really come in handy, because the various amulets' effects can be of major significance to your success. For example, the "Djed Pillar" - amulet boosts the speed of constructions, demolitions, upgrades and material delivery, while the Amulet of Steps upgrades all the houses currently in your possession to the maximum.

The addition of those amulets, in particular, could have made the game very demanding, requiring a lot of strategic thinking, but unfortunately it falls flat on challenge. Even the timed mode gives you plenty of time to finish each level, independently from which strategy you apply and which amulet you choose. The memory-like mini-game which you have to beat after each finished city also corresponds to the general easiness of the game, because it is simply impossible to fail.

In this context it is important to note that some aspects of the game, like how to train gardeners and farmers, or that houses near rivers can get damaged easier than other houses can be hard to understand in the beginning, but even when you neglect those features you are still able to beat every level easily until you are used to all the small details of the game.

The final challenge of nearly each level is to build really impressive Pyramids or temples, which always require a lot of workers and materials. The majestic buildings are really nice to look at, but since the level always ends with building those landmarks, you won't have much time to observe them. Another interesting change of tradition is the fact that you really have to react quickly when your houses need to be repaired. The longer you wait, the more workers and materials it will take to repair the damaged house.

Regarding graphics and music Empire Builder - Ancient Egypt cannot be criticized. The animations are smooth and soothing, and the music suits the theme of ancient Egypt very well, without getting annoying. The atmosphere is engaging and realistic, and you might even feel a bit afraid when one of the Pharaos points out that he is content with your work and can now neglect his previous thought to execute you.

All in all, we can definitely recommend Empire Builder - Ancient Egypt to those of you who generally prefer the relaxed type of building simulations. The game introduces some clever twists, does not take itself too seriously, and gratifies the player with wonderful graphics. With that said, avid fans of Build-a-lot should reduce our rating by one star, while those who really enjoyed Wonderburg or Plan It Green can even add half a star.

Manhunt is perhaps the most violent, amoral video game ever made, and it’s entirely unapologetic about it. Produced by the same team that created Grand Theft Auto, it sees you cast as a death-row inmate reprieved from the chair to take part in a sick game run by a snuff-movie producer.

You’re forced to sneak around a series of maze-like levels killing “hunters” and SWAT-team members as you go, using such unsavoury methods as suffocating them with plastic bags and cutting their throats with shards of glass. This is primarily a stealth-based title, using many of the same techniques as Metal Gear Solid–you shuffle around walls, peer round corners and use noise to attract and distract the enemy.

This aspect of the game works extremely well thanks to the superb graphics and sound. These create an intense level of tension, so that when you mistakenly knock into an abandoned shopping trolley and alert a hunter, it’s really quite terrifying. The combat, just as in GTA, is handled rather less well–but it’s not anywhere bad enough to ruin the whole game.

The story revolves around a man on Death Row named James Earl Cash, sentenced to death by lethal injection due to a grievous crime, the nature of which is never explained. An exceedingly wealthy former Hollywood director named Starkweather, who runs a seedy community in an impoverished town named Carcer City, bribes the doctors to inject Cash with a powerful sedative instead.

The Director, as he likes to call himself, creates and distributes snuff films through a company named Valiant Video Enterprises. He sets up Cash as his latest star using the corrupt Carcer City police force, as well as his personal “Cerberus” guards, to corral Cash into butchering Carcer’s local gangs on camera to make violent, visceral, underground snuff films.

Despite the disappointment of a rather short campaign, Neighbors From Hell is still worth a look for any strategy or puzzle game fan.

The premise of Neighbors From Hell centers on Woody, who is the star of a reality-based television show. As Woody, you must sneak into the house of your oafish-looking neighbor and play as many practical jokes on him as possible, all while remaining undetected. With each successful joke, the television ratings for that particular show will climb--you'll need to reach a minimum ratings threshold before the mission is considered complete.

With 2D graphics that remain fixed at a resolution of 800x600, Neighbors From Hell isn't the most technically impressive game, but it doesn't need to be. The art style is appropriately quirky and comical for a game based on practical jokes. Fans of the Wallace & Gromit short films will certainly appreciate the look and feel of Neighbors From Hell and its characters, who appear cartoonish, almost claymation-like. The game's sound also gets the job done without too much flashiness; the characters talk in a Sims-style gibberish, while the music tracks and laugh tracks remind you that you're playing a television show.

Aside from the premise, Neighbors From Hell's presentation also takes a cue from Spy vs. Spy. Your viewpoint consists of a cutaway, cross-sectional view of your neighbor's house. This means you can always keep an eye on what your neighbor is doing in the next room or on a different floor as you sneak around in another portion of the house. The developers of the game have also included a useful "thought bubble" feature in the bottom left of the screen that helps you keep tabs on your neighbor. If you're moving about the kitchen and you see the thought bubble change to a cup of coffee, you know you will need to clear out of the kitchen quickly, lest you get caught and beaten up by your neighbor.

Graphically, Hercules is a masterpiece. The game is energized with cartoon-style graphics that look almost as good as the animated movie. A staggering number of animation frames was used for the character movements - over 10,000! There are also some 3-D elements and objects in Hercules' world that are similar to those in the movie, such as the terrible nine-headed Hydra who was rendered with computer graphics in the movie. This seamless blend of 2-D and 3-D objects makes the game more than just a 2-D side scroller.

Although the visuals are impressive, they are only half the experience. The sound and music are fantastic, mirroring the musical score from the movie. Also from the movie are the voices of Danny DeVito, James Woods, and other stars. Around the World is primarily a hidden objects game. Each mission, of which there are 25, requires you to find a handful of items in whatever locale you are currently visiting. Like all products of the sort, you have hints to use and clicking too many times in the wrong spot will deduct points. It costs five thousands points to use a hint (which you can do each time the bar fills back up) and one thousands points for too many incorrect clicks in quick succession. Of course, finding items will give you points and finding them quickly will earn you even more.

After finding all of the objects, you'll need to complete one more puzzle to finish the mission. There's quite a bit of variety here. In one stage I was given a side by side comparison, similar to a "spot the difference" puzzle, but instead I had to replace certain items that were missing from either side. In another stage, I had to swap tiles in order to recreate an image on the left of the screen. You never know just what puzzle you'll get and that keeps you on your toes and makes the gameplay fresh.

Finally, as a nice little bonus, after completing each mission you'll be rewarded with facts and trivia about the place you just visited. I'm a firm believer in using games to help education, so I think this is a always a nice touch.

Virtual villagers puzzles

Puzzle 1 - The First Chief. Drop all your villagers on the robes in the
amphitheater: any villager except nursing moms can become chief. If you
can't find your chief right away, wait until the moms no longer have
babies and drop them on the robe. (You will need to repeat this process
each time the chief dies.)

Puzzle 2 - The Bee Hive. First, light the fire (collect wood and dry
grass in the firepit, then light the fire). Then drop an adult villager
on the burned out torches near the hive. He/she will return the torch
to the hive and calm the bees so you can collect honey.

Puzzle 3 - The Alchemy Lab. You will need an Adept Scientist (or more
than one). Scattered around the village (random locations) are 2
colored pots (red or yellow with white stripes), a brown pot, a gray
bowl with spoons, and a short spear (orange-brown handle with gray
blade). Drop your scientist(s) on each item and they will return it to
the lab - if they drop the item before reaching the lab, it will warp back to where you found it originally. Returning all five items solves the puzzle.

Puzzle 4 - The Roster of the Dead. At the far right of the map (use
keyboard shortcut '3' to get there) is a grassy area - at the upper
right of this area is a big leafy bush. Have your villagers remove
these leaves, which uncovers the roster of the dead (they will gain
building skill; trained builders can accomplish this faster).

Puzzle 5 - Weather Dancing. You will need Level 2 Leadership, a tribal
chief, and 3 Adept Farmers. First, drop the chief on your lit fire.
He/she will begin weather dancing. Then drop the farmers on the fire,
and they will join in. You will know they are successful when sparkles
appear over their heads and under their feet.

Puzzle 6 - The Lift. You will need 3 Adept Builders and Level 2 Restoration.
Once you have purchased the tech, drop your 3 builders on the "strange
machine" in the orchard. Make sure their action line reads "repairing
the lift". If you have done this correctly, the lift will be repaired.

Puzzle 7 - The Rubble. You will need Level 2 Restoration. Drop a villager
(preferably a builder) on the pile of rocks at the bottom of the map.
He/she will clear away the rocks, gaining building skill (builders will
accomplish this task faster).

Puzzle 8 - The Ancient Bath. You will need to have completed Puzzle 3
and have a Master Builder. Drop your builder on the "chalkboard" in the
alchemy lab (he/she will "see" it if you fly them over the lab) - he/she
will create the the plans for the bath. Drop your builders on the bath
to complete the project.

Puzzle 9 - The Statue. You will need Level 3 Restoration, Level 3 Leadership, a tribal chief, a Master Builder, and a completed bath (solved Puzzle 8). Drop the Master Builder on the chalkboard (which will be blank after the bath is completed), and he/she will draw up plans for the statue. Drag an adult villager (not a nursing mom) up the path to the door until he/she "Sees a good place to anchor the statue" -- this villager is more likely to be successful if he/she has some building skill. That villager will then build scaffolding to help anchor the statue. Your chief must direct work on the statue, so drop him/her on the statue to begin this process - if the chief stops directing work, then progress will halt until you return the chief to his/her duties. Once the chief is directing, you can then drop builders on the statue to help "pushing the statue". The villagers must push the statue up the path towards the door - this will take several hours (you can click on the statue to bring up a timer in the status bar that will help you determine how long is left - but this time depends on how many builders you have working on the project and may increase if builders leave the project). Your builders may occasionally complain that "there is no more room to help out" - only a limited number of builders can work on the statue at any given time.

Puzzle 10 - The Orchard. You should plant your first seed as soon as the game starts: this first seed is located next to the ruined lift: drop one of your adult villagers on this seed and he/she will plant it. To gather the next two seeds, you will need to have completed Puzzle 6 (The Lift). As soon as a rain storm starts, place an adult villager (but not a nursing mom) on the lift (his/her action line should read "Standing on the Lift") Leave the villager there until the lift reaches its highest point, when a seed will fall from the tree above. Drop the villager on the seed to plant it. You will need to plant a total of 3 seeds (the original plus two from the lift) to complete the orchard - the puzzle will be completed once all three trees have become mature (and start producing fruit - it takes about 8 hours on 'normal' speed for the tree to mature). Additional seeds (beyond the first three) will not be planted, but will instead be placed in the food bin.
(Note: If you have trouble getting to the lift before it starts to go up, you may wish to pause the game with the spacebar when you see the rain start before finding a villager. You will need to unpause the game to see their status line to make sure they are properly placed.)

Puzzle 11 - Banishing the Sharks. You will need to have completed Puzzle 3 and have at least Level 2 in your chosen faction, Nature or Magic.
For NATURE: collect the following herbs for a potion: 2 X Black Orchid, 1 x Pitcher Plant.
For MAGIC: collect the following herbs for a potion: 2 X Rose, 1 x Berry.
Have an adult villager (not a nursing mother) drink the potion. He/she will take a vial to the ocean. How the sharks are actually dealt with depends on the faction chosen (the nature potion is a shark repellant, the magic potion "charms" the sharks so they won't bother the villagers).

Puzzle 12 - Aromatherapy. You will need to have completed Puzzle 8, have Level 3 Medicine, and a Master Doctor. Drop your Master Doctor in the completed bath. He/she will fill the bowls around the bath with Lotus plants ("doing aromatherapy"). Then drop a Master Doctor on the fire to light the burners and finish the puzzle.

Puzzle 13 - The Ash Key. Later in the game (after at least one fire cycle - 10 hours on fast speed), you will notice sparkles around the fire. Let your fire go out (do not replenish it with firewood) - a diamond will appear in the ashes. The diamond will be too hot to pick up initially (it was in a fire, don't forget). To cool the key, drop adult villagers on the rightmost of the two waterfalls (where they go to drink and do laundry). They will gather water and drop it on the key. They will need to do this several times (8-10, at least) to make the diamond cool enough to touch - your villagers won't repeat this task on their own, so you will have to make them do it by dropping them on the waterfall. When the villagers no longer bring water to the fire (they'll revert to drinking from the waterfall when you drop them on it), drop a villager on the key - they will take it to the door and solve the puzzle. You will need to repeat this step if they drop the key before reaching the door.

Puzzle 14 - The Hanging Key. You will need to have solved Puzzle 3. Collect the following herbs for a potion: Cactus, Rose, Lotus. Make the potion and have villager (other than a nursing mom) drink it. That villager should feel "light and springy!". Drop them near the pink diamond (the hanging thing) just above the Rose plant - their status line should read "trying to reach the key". They will jump up, collect the key, and place it in the door. If they drop the key before reaching the door, you will have to resolve this puzzle.

Puzzle 15 - The Clam Key. You will need to have solved Puzzle 9. Once the statue is completed, a pearl will appear. Have a Master Builder pick up the pearl - he/she will take it to the waterfall to be "finished", then a master scientist needs to pick it
up and polish it, then have the tribal chief pick up the finished blue pearl: the chief will use the pearl to get the key from the giant clam and will then put the key in the door. (As with the other key puzzles, you may have to repeat parts of the puzzle if the key is dropped before it gets to the door).

Puzzle 16 - The Sun Dial. You will need to have solved Puzzles 13, 14, and 15. Once all three keys are in the door, the sun dial room will be revealed. Drop a villager on the sun dial until it reaches the position at the furthest left (there are three locations for the sun dial). When a beam of sunlight hits the sun dial, ghostly figures will appear in the room. Drop a villager on those ghosts and the mystery of the secret city will be revealed!

Some tips and hints:
-- Make sure to plant your first seed right away (drop an adult villager - but not a nursing mom - on the seed near the lift). That seed may be a mango, papaya, or banana (random chance).
-- The lift is useful for placing an adult and being able find them in the same place a few seconds later. (i.e. for getting the couples you want for making babies.) Other places are the waterfalls and bath (when complete.) The villagers will stay in that location for several seconds before wandering off to work or play.
-- When your adults are collecting objects (keys, firewood, etc.), they may drop them if interrupted by a celebration or if you click on them. The item will then "warp" back to where it was found originally.
-- The (collectable) tablet pieces will start to appear near the rubble when the rubble clearing project has gotten started with at least 2%.
